Here we present an antique Full-Stock American Jaeger Rifle, made circa the 1850s by Edward Tryon of Philadelphia, PA. This rifle features an octagonal 34” barrel in .42 caliber. It has a full-length stock with a heavy contour at the butt stock, which has a hearty cheek piece bordered with floral carvings. Single trigger. Tryon is marked on the lock.

The Tryon family business started in the early 1700s with a merchant from Holland bringing arms and Indian trade goods for sale into this "New Country" and continued for over 150 years. The business prospered as a gun and gun parts dealer in the early 1800s and evolved into a leading wholesale house and hardware store in the early twentieth century.

The Tryon story is important to collectors because it was in the center of the gun trade in our new country and, more specifically, in the Philadelphia area. The picture of Tryon as a gun maker is often clouded by Tryon's hardware store image of the late 1800s and the 1900s. The sale of imported and brand-name arms during this later period led many to consider Tryon merely another early Sears and Roebuck or Montgomery Ward with arms as a sideline, when he was actually one of the leading gunmakers of high-quality guns in the mid-1800s.

What is now recognized as the Jaeger type of rifle, goes back to at least the early 17th century. It is characterized by its short overall length, robust octagonal barrel and usually a substantial butt stock with raised cheek pieces. This made it very handy to carry and load for the forester or hunter where it originated in the Hesse and Bavaria regions of Germany. In fact, the jaeger was very influential in the design of what is now considered the American (Kentucky/Pennsylvania) Long Rifle. This was due to the jaeger’s use by some of the Hessian mercenaries during the American Revolutionary War, as well as the number of German immigrants that congregated in Pennsylvania in the 18th century. In addition, several countries liked the concept of the short jaeger rifle so much that they designed their military long arms after it.

The overall condition is very good. Original patina. The action is strong. The bore is well-rifled and untouched, probably since the period of use. The stock is in good condition; there are some minor splits at the front of the forestock that are stable.
