Antique J. KINCAID Half Stock .38 FLINTLOCK to PERCUSSION Conversion Rifle
Early to Mid-1800s HOMESTEAD/HUNTING Rifle
Description: Antique J. KINCAID Half Stock .38 FLINTLOCK to PERCUSSION Conversion Rifle Early to Mid-1800s HOMESTEAD/HUNTING Rifle Here we present an antique J. Kincaid Percussion Conversion Rifle made circa the 1830s-40s. This example would have started out life as a flintlock and was later converted when the more reliable percussion firing system was introduced. John Kincaid was a farmer and gunsmith in Trumble County, Ohio, and Boone County, Indiana. His farm was in the eastern part of the county, about eight miles east of Lebanon. Kincaid was born in Washington County, Pa., March 16, 1795, as the son of John and Martha Kincaid, and was the youngest of nine children. While young he was apprenticed to the cabinet trade and worked at that trade until he took up gunsmithing. When seventeen he served in the War of 1812, substituting for Robert Carr in August and served until November of that year. In 1815 Kincaid married Miss Christina Pope of Ohio, and they lived together almost seventy years. They first resided in Trumble County, Ohio, until the spring of 1848, when they moved to Boone Co., Indiana. The Percussion rifle was a type of rifle that utilized the percussion lock mechanism to fire a bullet or musket ball. The Percussion lock mechanism was an evolution of the flintlock mechanism used on earlier muskets and rifles, with the percussion rifle being introduced from around 1820. The percussion rifle had a slight advantage when it came to rate of fire over its flintlock counterparts. The use of a percussion cap reduced the reloading time, meaning the average number of shots per minute would consistently fall between three and four per minute. The percussion lock was also very reliable in wet conditions, and the reverse is true for the flintlocks with the primer not being affected by having water in contact with it, while the powder was virtually incapable of being exposed to water. The overall condition is very good. Strong action with a functional set trigger. The bore is in good shape for its age. This example sports a smooth brown original barrel patina. Markings are legible, except for the verbiage on the lock. The lock is lightly engraved with traditional floral designs. Solid stock throughout. “J. Kincaid” marked barrel. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 38 inches. Caliber: .38 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
