Antique GOLD INLAID Ornate Spanish .52 Caliber Caucasian MIQUELET Rifle
Late 18th to Early 19th Century Miquelet Rifle
Description: Antique GOLD INLAID Ornate Spanish .52 Caliber Caucasian MIQUELET Rifle Late 18th to Early 19th Century Miquelet Rifle Here we present an antique Ornate Antique Spanish Caucasian Miquelet Rifle, made circa the late 1700s to the early 1800s. The miquelet is an early and sturdy form of flintlock popular throughout the Ottoman Empire from the seventeenth into the early twentieth century. Several elaborately decorated guns very similar to this example are still preserved in Istanbul, possibly made for the Ottoman Imperial guard. A “Miquelet” is a type of flintlock developed in Spain. Miquelet lock is a modern term used by collectors and curators for a type of firing mechanism used in muskets and pistols. It is a distinctive form of snaplock, originally as a flint-against-steel ignition form, once prevalent in the Spanish, Portuguese, and Ottoman empires, Italy, North Africa, and the Balkans from the late 16th to the mid-19th centuries. The term miquelet lock was not recorded until the 19th century, long after the appearance of the mechanism in the 16th century and is of uncertain origin. One commonly held view is that it was coined by British troops in the Peninsular War to describe the style of musket used by the Miquelet (militia) that had been assigned to the Peninsular Army of the Duke of Wellington. In most of Spain, it was traditionally called the llave de rastrillo or "rake lock", and in Catalonia and Valencia it was called the pany de pedrenyal, or "flint-lock" or simply pedrenyal, meaning “flint”. This example has many delightful features. Gold plating adorns the action and barrel tang, ornately cast barrel bands, sling swivels, and a primitive adjustable buttstock. The action does not function. Good bore for its age. The stock is solid throughout. The adjustable buttstock is fragile and slides easily. Double peeps on the rear sight. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 23-3/4 inches. Caliber: .52 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
