Description: FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS Brass Barreled LONDON Proofs Antique French & Indian WarsPeriod - Revolutionary War Period Description: FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS Brass Barreled LONDON Proofs Antique French & Indian Wars, Revolutionary War Period Here we present an antique English Flintlock Blunderbuss, made circa 1750 in London, England. The term “Blunderbuss” comes for the Dutch meaning “thunder pipe”. The brass barreled blunderbuss started to be manufactured in the 1670s and proved quite popular both on board navalships and as a weapon for especially defensive purposes, much like shotguns are used today. They are also known as "coach guns" due to thier popularity in protecting stage coaches from highway bandits The brass barrel was able to withstand the corrosive sea water on board ship, for instance. They excelled for the purpose of boarding a ship or repelling boarders, and could be used at the entrances or on the ramparts of forts and as stage guns guns. This one is mid-sized,32 inches in loverall length with a 16 inch half-round ,half octogon brass barrel, a good size with which to fight—not enormous and cumbersome and not small, as some tend to be. It has some modest engraving as well. The diameter of the barrel at the muzzles about 1 3/4”. the barrel has an attractive pattern of corrosion, and the lock works well and the interior ot the lock is fine but the exterior surfaces have some pitting as seen in the pictures resulting probably from naval use. over its 350 year life, Agreat old original antique blunderbuss from the rvolutionary war period. The overall condition is very good. Nice patina. The breech of the barrel is marked with London proofs as well . The action works fine.. The bore is alittle rough and the barrel is patinated. The walnut stock is nicely checkered wrist to accent the metal parts and remains solid, with one old contemporary repair, as seen in the pictures . This is a great piece of British history!
