Rare Antique Spanish-American War Spanish Contract Ludwig Loewe & Co. Mauser Model 1893 Rifle 7x57mm with Bayonet
Description: For sale is an original antique Spanish-American War German manufactured Spanish contract Ludwig Loewe & Co. Mauser Model 1893 rifle as manufactured in 1896, and a rare example being in a fresh state of condition, untampered with in the modern day. Spanish troops were primarily equipped with Mauser Model 1893 rifles like this one at the Battle of San Juan Hill (aka Battle for the San Juan Heights) of July 1, 1898 near Santiago de Cuba. These deadly rifles, chambered in smokeless 7x57mm Mauser and with a clip-fed five-round internal magazine, played a significant role in the battle due to their superior range, accuracy, and faster-loading capabilities when compared with the Krag-Jorgensen rifles in use by American troops, and inflicted a large number of casualties during the battle. The zipping noise of rounds flying over the heads of American troops was compared to a mad hornet, and earned the 7mm round fired by these rifles the nickname “Spanish Hornet.” The Mauser Model 1893’s performance at San Juan, particularly in terms of its range and rate of fire, highlighted the effectiveness of modern clip-fed bolt action rifles in late 19th-century warfare, and was a major catalyst that lead to the adoption of the U.S. Springfield Model 1903 rifle. After the Spanish-American War, Francis Bannerman, a well-known military surplus dealer, acquired and sold these Mauser Model 1893 rifles to the public, advertising them in their catalogs as captured from the Spanish troops. The top of the receiver ring is crisply stamped with the Spanish Coat of Arms crest above “BERLIN 1896” indicating its production in Berlin, Germany in 1896. This rifle is part of the second Spanish contract filled in 1896 by Ludwig Loewe & Co. “MAUSER ESPAÑOL MODELO 1893, MANUFACTURA LOEWE BERLIN.” is marked on the left of the receiver. The rifle has ALL matching serial numbers, including the bolt, stock, rear sight ladder and slide piece, floorplate, trigger housing, and even the cleaning rod (VERY tough to find). The metal retains much of its original blue finish with scattered oxidation, the walnut stock is in near excellent condition with crisp edges, a few minor storage related handling marks, and absolutely sharp markings and stampings overall in both the metal and wood. A rare period correct early pattern German made short bayonet is included. The blade is maker marked “SIMSON & CO SUHL” and the side of the hilt has serial number "T1005”. Nice original matching examples of Spanish-American War German made Spanish Mauser Model 1893 rifles rarely ever turn up for sale. This one is fresh out of my safe. Price + shipping/packing.
