Available for sale is an absolutely beautiful and collectible Antique Military GEW 88 Commission rifle with the best Tiger Striping anyone could hope to find on a collectible rifle in good shooting condition!
This rifle was purchased over 20 years ago because of the beautiful Walnut stock that exhibits some of the best Tiger Striping I have ever seen on a GEW 88 rifle. The great part is this rifle stock has never been sanded and the original stock cartouches on the right side of buttstock are very distinct, as well as four (4) Arsenal cartouches stamped on the bottom of stock just behind the trigger guard.
This rifle is marked "Loewe Berlin 1891" on the receiver. There is an “S” stamped on the receiver which means that it has been converted by Mauser to the new "Spitzer" modern 8mm round. Both the receiver and the barrel are matching serial numbers of 10944. The bolt is un-numbered. The other numbers on barrel bands, trigger guard, shroud, rear sight do not match.
The bayonet lug/barrel band is marked "2.R.J.3.115."
The barrel shroud is in good condition with no significant dents that are readily visible. There is a very slight bend in the barrel shroud in the last 8 inches from bore, but you have to inspect hard to really see it. Barrel shroud fits into the Walnut stock nicely. No cracks towards the bore end of the Walnut stock. I have fired the rifle using Remington Core-Lokt 170 grain cartridges, and the gun fires a good grouping at 50 yards. All of the metal blueing is in good condition with a small amount of corrosion that can be seen on barrel shroud and the trigger guard. It's possible this gun has been arsenal re-blued at some point in its past. The bore has good rifling (lands and grooves), and no significant pitting corrosion to speak of, (See Pictures). I will include the test target with the rifle.
The pictures of the rifle were taken outdoors to really show the vivid Tiger Striping of this beautiful Walnut stock, as well as the metal finish and bluing on the barrel shroud, receiver, trigger guard. The stock has NOT been sanded or finished with any polyurethane type of coating. Only a coating of Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO) has been added to keep the wood protected. The stock does have a few scratches and dings for a 133 year old rifle, but the tiger striping is all natural and really stands out on this rifle.
There is also a quick detach sling swivel on the rear of buttstock. Rifle also comes with an original cleaning rod.
This rifle is antique status so no FFL is needed, but I will need to see proof of age at least 21 years old.
I will only sell in the lower 48 states.
