Fine CW ID Starr Breechloading .50 Cal. Carbine 1st Arkansas Union Cavalry
Description: Fine CW ID Starr Breechloading .50 Cal. Carbine 1st Arkansas Union Cavalry Offered here for sale is a very fine example of the Civil War issued breechloading carbine. In January 1858, Ebenezer Starr submitted his design for a single-shot, breech-loading rifle to the Washington Armory for evaluation. During testing, the rifle was noted to have no misfires, and its accuracy was considered better than average. Testers commented that if the gas seal could be improved, the weapon would be better than its rival, the Sharps carbine. The rifle was adopted as the Model 1858 carbine. Between 1861 and 1864, over 20,000 were produced by the Starr Arms Company of Yonkers, New York. The Model 1858 was designed to fire paper or linen cartridges. During the war, the Starr Arms Company had been the fifth largest supplier of carbines and the third largest supplier of .44 caliber single action pistols. After the war had ended, and with no further government contracts, Starr could no longer compete with larger manufacturers like Winchester, Sharps, and Colt, and the company closed its doors in 1867. This specimen, serial number 13622, is all original and in fine condition. It has a 21” barrel which retains just about all of its blued finish. The receiver, hammer and lever have similar but a mixture of blue with grey patina. The markings are very sharp . The wood shows average use consistent with service use with a light coating of wax/varnish. The left side of the stock still has a very light but visible inspector’s cartouche. The brass buttplate and barrel band make the carbine stand out an attractive. The bore is NEAR MINT. The Springfield Research service which has records of government issued examples of Civil War rifles and carbines notes that this specimen is a range match to have been issued to the 1st Arkansas (Union) cavalry. Many were issued to this regiment and this serial number through research in that organization may turn up the individual soldier who used the carbine. The service provides search material from the U.S. Ordnance records in the National Archives for a fee. The First Arkansas Union Cavalry played a unique role in Civil War history. The troops, especially the enlisted men, were not Yankees but Southern Unionists. They were primarily from Northwest Arkansas, and were assigned to occupy their home town and county for two and a half years. It was a very bitter war among neighbors fighting each other as Confederate guerrillas and as Union cavalrymen. After the war the First Arkansas commander, Colonel Marcus LaRue Harrison, stayed on in Fayetteville and became its post-war mayor for a time. The regiment was mustered out of the army in August 1865. During their service in a regiment of 1,765 men, 110 had been killed, and another 235 died from disease or accidents. A very attractive and historic Civil War collectible.
