Description: DOCUMENTED British Antique KETLAND & COMPANY MILITIA Type Conversion Musket WAR OF 1812/CIVIL WAR .69 Caliber FUSIL Here we present an antique Documented English Thomas Ketland & Company Militia Style Percussion Conversion Musket, made in Birmingham, England circa the late 1700s to early 1800s. Ketland & Company was one of the most prominent and active British makers of the day. John and Thomas Ketland were the sons of Thomas Ketland and grandsons of William Ketland, who had been making locks and guns for the colonies since the early 18th Century. This example would have started out life as a flintlock and converted to percussion using the “Bolster” style conversion likely sometime shortly before the American Civil War. It features Birmingham proofs and “No. 13” marked on top of the barrel with inspection initials “K.W.S.” between the proofs. This musket checks all the boxes as being a militia musket from the War of 1812 era that likely found its way into the Civil War. The lock plate on this musket is marked "T/Ketland/& Co" ahead of the hammer. The full length stock has brass furniture including the side plate and buttplate. This War of 1812 era conversion musket is illustrated and described on pages 122-123 of the book The English Connection: Arms, Material, and Support Furnished to the Confederate States of America by Great Britain by Pritchard et al. The overall condition is good. Dark patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and dim. The stock shows use throughout. There are cracks on either side of the first ramrod tube that are stable. Here is an interesting Militia style musket to supplement a collection! Own the original!
