Description: Ward-Burton Carbine .50 Cal. Only 316 Manufactured. This model was one of the original bolt action rifles for U.S. military arms and is considered to be an experimental arm. IT ORIGINALLY HAD A BRIGHT METAL FINISH AS SHOWN - "IN THE WHITE". IT DID NOT HAVE BLUING. Manufactured circa 1871. The Ward Burton rifle was one of the winners in the preliminary 1872 Breech loading Trials, along with Sharps, Remington and Allin. The Ordnance Dept. ordered 316 carbines and 1011 rifles made at Springfield for further field trial. These bolt action rifles and carbines had a fluted bolt body with two opposed sections of interrupted thread locking lugs at the rear. They were all manufactured with fairly close machining tolerances for the time. The bore is bright and shinny. See pictures for condition. Appears to operate as it should. How many of the 316 do you think still exist and in this shape?
