REMINGTON No.1 ROLLING BLOCK "BUFFALO GUN CATAGORY" .44-90 OCT.
Description: A TRUE EARLY No.1 ROLLING BLOCK SPORTING RIFLE IN THE RARE AND DESIRABLE “BUFFALO GUN” CATEGORY, #2XXX, .44-90 CALIBER, 30” MEDIUM HEAVY OCTAGON BARREL WITH SINGLE SET TRIGGER. This is an early sporter, probably from the early to mid 1870s, has the early patent markings on the upper tang with the last patent date 1866. The 30” octagon barrel measures just over an inch across the flats at the muzzle and has the correct Remington crown. The bottom of the barrel is marked “44 CTG’E S” The “S” is for Sharps. Usually these were for the .44-77 bottle neck cartridge, but this one appears to be for the larger .44-90 cartridge. Matching number on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm and on the receiver. Overall weight is just over ten pounds which is fairly heavy for a Rolling Block. Fine wood showing normal handling/hunting usage with good wood to metal fit, forearm has some light saddle wear to the bottom and retains the correct steel forend tip. Naturally aged dark receiver with some similarly aged blue remaining on the breech block. The barrel is thin aged blue mixing heavily gray/brown. Has the desirable flip up “Rough & Ready” rear sight with ladder and peep mounted in a long dovetail just ahead of the receiver ring. Also has an additional dovetail that was often provided for a small spirit level and has a blank filler. Rocky Mountain blade front sight. Single set trigger “sets” but doesn’t quite hold- it has the small adjustment screw in the rear of the trigger that probably just needs to be tightened or loosened for it to catch completely, Surprisingly excellent bore with fine rifling all the way through that is only a little dark and could use a good cleaning out. These are actually quite a bit more scarce than the Sharps heavy sporters.
