Description: The Seller's Book lists an "Orville Holmes" in Hudson, Wisconsin, circa 1891. It is also interesting to note that these initials correspond to the poet and his son Oliver Wendell Holmes, who comes up as an associate of George Shattuck, who also has a name connected with gunsmithing (G.S. Shattuck). Did these men dabble in gun experimentation - who knows? Rifle has a 30" blued octagon rifled barrel with Lyman sheared blade front sight and Buckhorn adjustable rear sight and is stamped at breech "O.W. Holmes". Action has hammer that allows for centerfire or rimfire use controlled by a plain single trigger. Plain walnut butt stock with crescent steel butt plate and matching walnut plain splinter forearm with pewter nosecap// tight crack behind upper tang //// A rifle worthy of more research..
