EXTRA HEAVY OCTAGON BARREL REMINGTON
NO. 1 ROLLING BLOCK BUFFALO RIFLE, .44-77 CALIBER, #8XXX
Description: EXTRA HEAVY OCTAGON BARREL NO. 1 ROLLING BLOCK BUFFALO RIFLE, .44-77 CALIBER, #8XXX. Rolling Block Sporting Rifles with barrels actually larger than the receiver are very rare and are generally put in the “Buffalo Gun” category. This example has the standard length barrel for this model of 26” (barrels were available in 2” increments out to about 34” for an extra charge), but is massive. It is significantly larger than the octagon receiver top and measures over 1 1/8” at the muzzle. The muzzle also has the correct Remington crown in which the octagon edges are beveled or rounded so that when viewed directly on will actually make the muzzle appear round- this is a good way to tell if a barrel has been cut as most cut barrels don’t have this distinct Remington crown. Interestingly, this rifle has the deep crescent butt plate instead of the usually encountered “carbine-style” butt plate. Correct Remington markings on the barrel top with “44 S” stamped on the bottom flat ahead of the receiver. The metal forend cap, barrel and receiver numbers match. Excellent dark and nicely figured walnut butt stock with correct round “flairs” at the receiver juncture with very tight wood to metal fit. Exc. forend also with tight wood to metal fit. The barrel shows nice thinning blue with nickel silver Rocky Mountain blade front sight with a buckhorn rear sight- looks to be a replacement rear sight, along with a sporting tang sight. Mostly gray/brown receiver with Remington’s patent dates stamped correctly on the left side with the last patent date of 1873. The bottom of the barrel under the forearm is also stamped “S.T.” which usually means the rifle was fitted with a single set trigger, yet this one has a standard trigger, so possibly this was a left over barrel or the customer changed the order from set trigger to standard trigger. The bore is excellent and bright with sharp rifling and no signs of pitting throughout! This one weighs just over 11 lbs which is extremely heavy for a 26” barrel sporting rifle. Tight action with nice deep blue on the hammer and breech block. These don’t come up for sale often.
