Original 38 Caliber Kentucky Rifle made by Peter Reinhard in Loudonville, Ohio
Description: This listing is for my original mid-1800's Reinhard half-stock Kentucky rifle. I bought this rifle from a local dealer in 2006 and shot it quite a bit in the ensuing years. A .375 round ball fits the bore perfectly, so I used a .360 ball with a light patch and 40 gr. of FFg or FFFg powder (a pretty much exact measure using an empty 45 Long Colt cartridge case). It was a lot of fun to shoot with black powder and round balls, and cleaned up easily afterward. I just attached a piece of tubing to the nipple, poured very hot water through the barrel until it came out clean, and then performed a regular cleaning with patches, solvent, and oil. My shooting time now is very limited and I find this rifle just sitting in the back of the safe. The rifle is sound and shoots well. The bore is in very good condition. The set trigger works correctly. The barrel is marked "P. Reinhard" on top at the rear. I researched the maker and he was Peter A. Reinhard, born in Bavaria around 1827 and came to the United States at a very young age. He established a gunsmith business in the village of Loudonville, OH, which is between Columbus and Canton, OH. He died October 31, 1897, and is buried in the Loudonville Cemetery. His record in Ancestry shows he died in Pennsylvania, but that does not sound likely. I will include his family record and copies of Census records from 1860, 1870, and 1880 showing his presence in Loudonville as a gunsmith. The rifle is equipped with an original H. Elwell back-action lock. I read that there was a lock maker named H. Elwell who made gun parts in western PA or Eastern OH in the 1800's. Gunsmiths usually bought locks from lock makers such as Elwell or Goulcher rather than making these delicate mechanisms themselves. The rifle has seen a lot of use and the thin strips of wood on both sides of the barrel are missing (see photos). A piece of brass has been installed below the drum due to burning from the percussion caps. There are a couple of hairline cracks in the wood in the area of the breech, but nothing that affects its integrity. This is a nice old rifle that is steeped in history, but can still be enjoyed at the range or even hunted with today. I hate to see it go, but nobody in my family wants my guns after I am gone. The price is $500 plus $60 shipping. Due to local shipping restrictions, I must ship it in two parts- the barrel in one shipment and the stock in a separate one. It will cost me more than the $60 to ship, but I will absorb the difference. Thanks for looking ! SOLD Antique: Yes |
