WAR OF 1812 U.S. SPRINGFIELD 1795
TYPE III MUSKET
Description: .44- 7/8" barrel bearing arsenal proofs with "MS" inspection at the breech. Early type I lock with US. under the eagle, and Springfield horizontally at the rear. Full length walnut stock bearing the "MS" inspection on the left flat, and the 1812 cheekpiece. The butt is dated 1812. It should be noted that at the outbreak of the War of 1812 the military storekeeper at Springfield, John Chaffee indicated that only one in twenty muskets were serviceable. He was ordered to stop production of new muskets are devote his efforts to making what is store usable. All of the available metal parts were used under the direction of superintendent Benjamin Prescott were to used before the fabrication of new parts. ref. "AMERICAN MILITARY SHOULDER ARMS VOL.
