Superb US Model 1835/1840 Springfield Flintlock Musket
Description: Superb US Model 1835/1840 Flintlock Musket In Original Flint The US Model 1835/1840 Flintlock Musket, is one of the most sought after US Military Flintlocks, due to it being the last of the flintlock era and having such a short production time span. It is often referred to as both the Model 1835 and Model 1840. The confusion of the two dates comes from the approval date for the model officially being in 1835, but actual production didn’t take place until 1840. This model was the last official regulation flintlock musket to be adopted by the US military, had a resemblance to the French Model 1822, and was replaced by the US Model 1842, with its percussion ignition system, two years later. Previous US Model muskets (M-1816, M-1822, and M-1828) were produced at the Springfield Armory, Harpers Ferry, and various other contractors, but the M-1835/40 was only produced at three locations. Those locations were, the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, from September 1839 to June of 1844, with a total of 30,421 being produced. Daniel Nippes Company in Mill Creek, Pennsylvania, from July of 1842 to March of 1846, with a total of 5,100, and Lemuel Pomeroy of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, from February 1840 to 1846, with a total of 7,000. By 1842 with the adoption of the US M-1842 and its percussion ignition system, the US Ordinance Dept. began converting the flintlocks in US Armories over to percussion systems, beginning with the newest and best condition models first. Of the 30,421 muskets produced at Springfield, 26,841 of them were converted to percussion, with some of the 3,580 remaining flintlocks to be converted at a later date, leaving only a few M-1835/40 still in original flintlock. With the number of Flintlocks of this model being so few, makes this musket quite rare and highly sought after by collectors today. The Model 1835/40 was originally produced with a flintlock ignition system, was .69 Caliber, with a 42” long smoothbore barrel with a bayonet lug mounted underneath the barrel 1-1/8” from the muzzle, mounted to a 54- ¾” long black walnut stock, giving it an overall length of 57-13/16”. All of its furniture was iron and was finished in Armory Bright. One of the distinguishing features of this model is the ½” round jaw screw clearance aperture on the cock, which differs from the previous models produced.
