REVOULUTIONARY WAR BROWN BESS 42"barrel rare pat. 1757/59 Marine or Militia Pat.
Description: REDUCED PRICE!I WILL TAKE OFFERS have a very rare second model BROWN Bess for sale. This is the Pattern 1757/59 Marine or Militia Musket 42 " 76 cal barrel. This model was made after Parliaments creation of the 1757 Militia Act.These were intended to arm the newly created Militia men as well as arm Marines serving in the Royal Navy. This model originally was made to take a wooden ramrod. In 1759 they were charged to take steel ramrods .In several years of overlap many of these were adapted by private contractors to take the steel ramrod by installing retaining springs in the larger diameter pipes . This musket shows a spring in the lower pipe and is one of these conversions. This is described very well in the book THE BROWN BESS by Erik Goldstein & Stuart Mobray pages 84 to 91.This model of musket is also pictured on page 62 of George Neumann's Battle Weapons of the American Revolution. This musket has a pattern 1777 lock with the earl engraved marks. The inside of the lock has a B W stamp for lock maker Benjamin Willets whose last contract was in 1780 so this pre dates that.See page 121 of the book The Brown Bess for the same mark. This musket has a 42 barrel with prpperproofs stamped in the middle area GR over arrow over Crown crossed scepters. There is a number 11 Also stamped in this area. The barrel has a dark old smooth patina The lock has very visible marks The lock has two clicks and frizzen still snaps shut. The stock is in very good condition with a nice patina and shows a store keeper stamp. The stocks was made with out a tail pipe unique to this model and other Sea service muskets. The brass furniture has a nice patina The musket comes with the correct Short Land Pattern bayonet. This bayonet still has its period tar covering sometimes put on Royal Navy arms. Iam not an expert on this model but please ask any questions you have.Shipping will be $ 70.00 in the lower 48 States Thanks SOLD Antique: Yes |
