Rare Original Austrian Flintlock Cavalry Carbine
Description:
NSN, .69 Caliber, 14 1/2" smoothbore barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a small amount of mild freckling towards the muzzle. This is an original, unconverted flintlock carbine, dated "851" (1851) on the Double Eagle marked lockplate. The metal has a more or less uniform plum-brown patina with areas of mottled gray on the lockplate and breech end of the barrel. The barrel itself has a maker stamp on the top of the breech: "GB", and has thin, pinprick pitting along the top. Three "H 72" part numbers are present on the trigger guard, sideplate, and barrel band, with a further "22" stamp on the top of the band. The touchhole exhibits almost no erosion, and the gun appears to have seen very little use. The action is quite robust and fully functional. The walnut stock has an old varnished finish added over numerous minor handling marks and blemishes, and a single very small chip near the toe of the butt on the right side. A correct metal ramrod is included with the carbine. Most of these original flintlock carbines were converted to percussion in the mid-19th century and large numbers were shipped to the US during the Civil War.
