Rare Colonial American Revolutionary War Dutch Flintlock Infantry Musket - Type Used by Continental Army / Patriot Minuteman Militia
Description: Rare Colonial American Revolutionary War Dutch Flintlock Infantry Musket, .78 cal smoothbore, mfg. circa 1750's. In the years leading up to the American Revolution Dutch muskets could be found in great quantity throughout the colonies and were used extensively by patriots during the early years of the war. Many had been made under contract with the British government to arm colonial regiments fighting for the crown during the French & Indian War while others were imported specifically for the patriot cause as the Revolution unfolded. Interesting to note the musket that fired the first shot at Bunker Hill was a Dutch gun of similar form and sold at in October 2019 for nearly a half million dollars! This gun came from a very old and extensive collection here in Connecticut and is a fantastic representation of a patriot's musket. The barrel measures 46" long fitted with a bayonet lug and low brass blade front sight which is set back 5" from the muzzle. There is a thin wedding band turning about 9" from the breech with five lines engraved around the breech itself. The metal shows much wear and use with an even dark plum patina throughout. Flat faced banana style lock common to early/mid 18th century Dutch arms. The touch hole looks to have been reworked long ago however the pan appears original and unaltered. A pan bridle has been added likely during it's service in the Revolution and the round faced cock is also a period replacement perhaps taken from a Brown Bess or 1770's vintage Dutch gun. The top of the cock looks to have been repaired and the top jaw has been filed on but appears original to the cock. The frizzen is probably a Dutch/German replacement contemporary with the added pan bridle. The feather spring is 20th century replacement. The stock features a lovely clamshell motif carved around the barrel tang and has an attractive dark heavily worn appearance overall. There is a minor old surface chip behind the barrel tang and a well worn hidden diagonal splice in the forearm just above the ramrod entry pipe. The wear and finish on the forearm is consistent with the rest of the stock and I would have to assume it was replaced during the gun's working life. One must remember American guns were constantly being repaired and rebuilt throughout the Revolution and this musket certainly shows the wear and tear of a battle worn veteran. Original Dutch brass buttplate, sideplate, triggerguard, and nosecap all retain a wonderful thick blackened patina. The ramrod pipes may be American castings contemporary with the forearm and likewise show a blackened color. Ramrod is probably from an early French Charleville. Sling swivels removed in typical American fashion. The action is strong and functions securely. The frizzen is loose and springs weakly. Lovely original forged rat tail trigger. A great looking Revolutionary War musket with all the charm one would expect from a gun that saw years of battle.
