New England Militia Musket, .70 Caliber Flintlock
Description: Very likely made in Massachusetts, this .70 caliber smooth bore flintlock rifle is dated 1823 on the barrel tang, and stamped with a circled "P" proof, an eagle head, and the letters "MLM" on the rear left side of the barrel. While it conforms to a general military pattern, the barrel is pinned to the black walnut stock, and the hardware is all brass. The lock is civilian in style and there is a silver initial plate surrounded by silver wire inlay on the wrist of the stock. It appears unaltered from the time of manufacture and is in working condition. The barrel is 42 inches in length, apparently a little longer than usual, and the stock is sound. These guns were most likely intended for dual purposes-to be used as a soldier/citizens arm for military and private game shooting. This gun originally came to us from Massachuisetts and likely has always been there since it was new. It is a fine example of it's time, and 100% original.
