Here we present an antique Flintlock Smoothbore Musket by Lazaro Lazarino in Braga, Portugal, circa the 1870s. This maker appears to have made simple, obsolescent firearms for colonial markets in the late-19th Century. This gun uses a smoothbore barrel of 40+” and .66 caliber and a back action lock of Austrian military origin (dated [1]870) to propel a flintlock cock. Essentially, this gun is similar to English guns from this same period, which were purposefully built with technology that had been out of use since about the 1840s, and sold to native peoples in the “New World”. These guns would have been useful and desirable to those peoples who had no ability to make such weapons themselves, and who, in many cases were still using bows, spears, and other primitive weapons in the wilderness or frontier areas. They would have been used for hunting, defense against dangerous animals, as well as human conflict.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. Good smooth bore (aged). The stock is solid with an average amount of wear (minor dents and dings). Legible markings. A neat flintlock musket that is not seen often in North America.
