Here we present an antique Paget Carbine by W.L. & H. Sargant, made in the early 1830s. The Paget Carbine was championed by the Cavalry officer Lord Henry Paget, and thus it soon became known as the “Paget” carbine. Henry Nock was likely the actual designer of it. The carbine proved quite popular with Light cavalrymen because of the ease of loading and firing while mounted with its captive ramrod and short barrel as well as overall length. It was also light at 5 ½ lbs.

While it was designed sometime around 1806, the Paget carbine did not see general use in the British Army until 1808. It saw extensive use throughout the Peninsular War, and the Paget carbine, with its namesake Lord Henry Paget, fought in the Waterloo Campaign. Paget was injured at the Battle of Waterloo and had his leg amputated. He still lived to 1854 to the ripe old age 85 when he died.

After 1815, the carbine continued to be used, even though rifled carbines had become favored by British army officials.  As such the carbine saw service in Britain's colonial wars into the 1830s. Its role in the North America came by way of the Mexican army. In 1826, over 15 thousand carbines were shipped from Britain to Mexico. As a result, the carbine was used at the Battle of the Alamo and archaeological evidence shows it also saw service at the Battle of Palo Alto. And it didn’t end with the liberation of Texas. The Mexican cavalry continued to use it when the Mexican-American War broke out in 1846.

The overall condition is good. Dark gray patina throughout. Birmingham commercial proofs. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock has been repaired at the wrist.
