Smith - Jennings Repeating Rifle - Forerunner of the Henry Rifle
Description: This is an extremely scarce.54 caliber First Model Smith Jennings Repeating Rifle. Less than 1500 Smith Jennings were made in 1851-52. It was designed by Lewis Jennings and Horace Smith who later formed Smith & Wesson. It was the predecessor to the Smith & Wesson Lever action pistols, Volcanic lever actions, the Henry Rifle and utlimately the Winchester. These seldom are seen for sale and are a key component of an advanced Winchester collection. This gun is in very good condition in all respects have a pleasing smooth patina to the metal with nice markings and crisp factory engraving. The action works perfectly. It still has the automatic pill priming mechanism which is missing from most examples. Although you would not shoot it, the bore is in excellent condition. The walnut buttstock has a nice figure with a small repair to the lower toe which was well done in antiquity. It also comes with an original .54 caliber Hunt Rocket Ball Cartridge which are about impossible to find. The Hunt Rifle was the orignal magazine fed lever action but only one exists. The Smith Jennings represents the next evolution of the tubular magazine lever action. This has sat in my safe and is time to go to a new caretaker. Thanks for looking. The best way to reach me is by email. SOLD Antique: Yes |
