Offered here is a desirable high condition example of a Burnside Rifle Co. manufactured Spencer Model 1865 carbine.
Manufactured between April 1865 to 1866, the Spencer Model 1865 carbine was introduced in service right at the conclusion of the American Civil War, and the strong majority saw significant hard use by both the U.S. military and civilians during the Indian Wars and westward expansion, in which cavalry and western settlers found these weapons to be very effective in skirmishes with Native American tribes.
As a lever action repeater that uses a seven round tubular magazine, the Spencer carbines had an edge in firepower over many firearms of the time, and were highly favored by their users.
The Model 1865 carbine differed from the Model 1860 before it in having a Stabler cutoff device and a 20 inch barrel chambered for the .56-50 rimfire (50 Spencer) cartridge. Burnside manufactured Model 1865 carbines, such as this one, have three-groove rifling, whereas Spencer manufactured Model 1865 carbines have six-groove rifling.
This gorgeous example has much of its original blue finish showing on the barrel with crisp rifling in the bore, and very strong patterns of original case colors on the frame and components. The walnut forearm and buttstock have an outer glossy protective coating applied on them at some point in the past, with the left of the buttstock bearing the original crisp stamped “ESA” bordered inspection cartouche of Erskine S. Allin, Springfield Armory’s master armorer. The gun is mechanically excellent, with crisp clicks in the lock.
