FRENCH/BRITISH Antique KYNOCH 1866/1873 CHASSEPOT
Description: FRENCH/BRITISH Antique KYNOCH 1866/1873 CHASSEPOT Scarce British Conversion of French Needlefire Rifle Here we present a French antique Chassepot Model 1873 Kynoch Conversion Bolt Action Rifle. This rifle was originally made as a needlefire rifle circa 1866 and would have seen action during the Franco-Prussian War in the hands of the French from July 19, 1870-January 28, 1871. Many in the French military pointed to the finnicky Chassepot Model 1866 as the reason for the defeat, so in 1873, the French government contracted with Kynoch Gun Factory in Aston, England, to convert some of these rifles to a more conventional centerfire system. George Kynoch ran a thriving ammunition manufacturing business in Birmingham, where he also made small quantities of firearms. Kynoch was a second choice in a way, as the Mauser system was probably the best at the time, but, understandably, the French did not like the idea of paying their adversaries to update their armament. Meanwhile, the French adopted a new system in the Gras Model 1874 the next year. These guns were obsolete very quickly during this period of rapid arms development, nevertheless, some seeing use in converted forms through World War I. This single shot rifle is marked “KYNOCH-GUN-FACTORY-ASTON”, “MUSKET-43-77-380” and “KYNOCH’S-PATENT”. The top of the butt plate is marked “1877”, which is almost certainly a date. Birmingham proof marks litter the barrel, receiver and bolt. The numbers on the bayonet lug, barrel and bolt match. Since it does not have a magazine, the stock is relatively slender. The overall condition is very good to fine. About 80% of the original blue finish remains on the rifle. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The stock shows typical handling marks. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a scarce and interesting French rifle! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 31-1/2 inches. Caliber: 11mm Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
