**SOLD** Early 1800's British Brass-Barreled Flintlock Blunderbuss
** Handsome Original Naval / Coach Blunderbuss **
Description: This is a very cool antique British Brass Barrel Flintlock Blunderbuss likely made in the early 1800's. These were the ultimate close-range weapon of this period used extensively by British Naval boarding parties and by coach drivers with important cargo or people aboard. This particular example has a brass barrel measuring 14" inches long and with a muzzle that is just a little over 1.25" inches in diameter. This was a man-portable cannon for all intents and purposes. It could be loaded with all manner of projectiles from birdshot to lead balls to nails and scarp metal in a pinch. In coach duty it could take out both men and horses that dared to ride up alongside with ill intent, and in naval boarding duty could clear a section of deck full of men in one shot. This particular example is not marker-marked but carries British proofs. It has an overall length of 30" inches making it very handy to carry and it is built with very sturdy materials complete with extra fitted brass plate reinforcement opposite the lock. This brass plate is as long and tall as the lock opposite it, and it is fastened with 5 screws in addition to the two screws that hold in the lock. The flintlock itself is a handsome yet basic design with minimal engraving or ornamentation. All of the springs, hammer, and flashpan, and frizzen are iron. The lockplate is 5" inches long and just a hair over an inch tall at the highest point. If it was ever marked with a maker name forward of the hammer it is no longer visible due to erosion of the metal from the flashpan right above it. The 14" inch brass barrel transitions from octagon in shape to round before flaring at the muzzle. There are four bands fashioned into the brass giving the barrel a cannon-like appearance. The stock is roughly checkered around the wrist for grip and is fit with all brass hardware. The ramrod is tapered steel with a brass tip rather than wood. The triggerguard is nicely adorned with floral engraving on the bottom of the trigger bow itself with a long rear tang and a tooled front tang that is engraved with a pineapple and pedestal. The rear tang is 5" inches long and helps support the and reinforce the wrist. The buttplate is a shotgun-style brass buttplate with a thin top tang that has floral/scroll engraving on it. The ramrod fittings consist of one banded tube 1.5" inches long near the muzzle and a nicely pipe fitting that is inlaid into the stock with a pointed tail that extends almost an inch back into the wood. This British Blunderbuss is still in good working order. The hammer still has both a half and full-cock position, the frizzen snaps down or up as designed, and the trigger will drop the hammer with a light pull from full-cock only. We would strongly advise against it, but there is nothing keeping this Blunderbuss from functioning just like it did 200 +/- years ago! If you have been looking for a cool all-original blunderbuss for your collection or for display as decoration here is your chance to get the real deal for a great price. As an antique this can be shipped directly to your home, no FFL needed.
