This early 17th or late 16th Century Wheellock was most likely designed for military cavalry use. It is of carbine or long pistol design and could be fired with one or both hands. The barrel is 22 inches in length and the short paddle or pear shaped butt would allow it to be fired from the cheek or the out stretched hand. It is approximately .64 caliber and weighs 4 lbs., 5 oz.. Unadorned wheellocks are scarce, as most were decorated for wealthy owners. The simple, very plain cavalry styles apparently did not survive their rigorous use. The condition of the piece is very good. The wood is solid with a nice aged patina and the metal is smooth with only minor oxidation. It is completely original and unaltered.
