Description: BRITISH 1781 Dated EAST INDIA COMPANY Marked PERCUSSION Conversion Musket JOHN GILL Marked with EIC Heart Logo and BAYONET! Here we present an antique British East India Company Marked Percussion Conversion Musket, made circa the late 1700s. This musket would have started out life as a flintlock and was converted sometime after the more reliable percussion firing system was introduced. This musket would have served as some point with the East India Company throughout the late 18th century and well into the 19th Century. It is very likely that it was witness to the Indian Mutiny in 1857. This musket shows signs of use well after it was made obsolete, likely in Indian or Nepalese hands. John Gill worked with his father, Thomas Gill as a Sword Cutler & Gunmaker out of 83 St. Jame's Street in London circa 1806-1809. The overall condition is good. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and dark. The bayonet is stamped “JOHN GILL”. On the left side of the barrel “IPR EXR / 2467” is hand stamped—probably some sort of export or registration marking. On the lock, the engravings appear to read “1787” and “HINSHAW”. This example is also engraved with what appears to be the East India Company Heart logo on the lock. The bayonet is ill-fitted and seated loosely. The stock shows much use, likely having been through a conflict or two. Here is a great example of a late 18th century musket with a lot of history!
