Antique, Original Moroccan Camel Gun (Snaphance Lock, Early 19th Century)
Description: The Jezail (sometimes Jezzail from the Arabic) is a simple, cost-efficient and typically handmade muzzle-loading long arm commonly used in the Middle East region in the past. These were all highly personalized, so no two were alike. They were often made with locally available locks, so it was common to see locks on these that were of varied origin. Many gunsmiths set up in Tétouan and used skills they learned from Spain to make guns such as these. They used the Snaphance (also written "Snaphaunce") system, a forerunner of the traditional flintlock system that had yet to be introduced. These long guns were intended to be used from the saddle of a camel. They had smooth bores, but were surprisingly accurate. Production continued for over 200 years, even through the Victorian Era. This gun is a great example of such Jezails made between 1800 and 1820, using the finest materials available and enhanced in masses of Coin Silver. These were most likely smelted from Spanish 16th and 17th century "Treasure" looted or mined in South America. The amazing long stock, measuring 56" overall, is fully inlaid with camel bone, copper inlays, round topped nails, and engraved and embossed barrel bands. The sheer volume of this work is truly extensive. The lock is iron, faithfully copying the 16th/17th century style of the Spanish Snaphaunce firearms, despite the technology being 200-300 years out of date. This gun is mechanically sound. However, as the lock functions approximately 20 bore, we would highly recommend never firing the piece. It comes with a very ornate hammered-copper powder flask that is contemporary to the gun. This is a unique piece of North African and Middle Eastern history. All items are also available for sale in our brick & mortar store and are subject to prior sale. Think long, think wrong. Payment On firearms, we typically only accept credit cards or money orders/cashier's checks.
