This .243 and the adjoining .223 Ruger #1 custom rifles were created as a pair. Both rifles are a collaboration of Mark Stratton, metalsmith, Kent Bowerly, stockmaker, and Robert Evans, engraver. Mark machined the octagon barrel, custom sling swivel base, custom quarter rib/scope base, recessed safety, steel trigger, and detailed filed the action and lever. Kent shaped the stocks from matching blanks of exhibition California English walnut, precisely inletting the metalwork before carefully shaping the outside contours to his classic style and fitting the checkered steel Biesen buttplate and single screw Fisher grip cap. He even fitted a New England Custom Guns forend eschutcheon to dress up the othewise awkward Ruger attachement screw. Kent chose nearly identical stock blanks of exhibition California English walnut. He carefully inlet the metal for a tight fit then shaped the contours to his characteristic classic pattern. After applying his usual high polish oil finish, Kent checkered the wrist and forend with his famous near-flawless 24 line-per-inch diamonds capped off with perfect muellered borders. After a final polish the metal went to Bob Evans who performed another of his signature engraving jobs with precise gold wire borders and beautiful gold inlayed animals (Cougar on the right and Mule Deer Buck on the left side) surrounded with his stylish fully developed scroll work. To finish off the project George Komadina blued the metalwork with his well-known deep black finish which highlights the gold and protects the steel surfaces so well.
The rifles have not been fired and remain in almost perfect original condition. Amazingly they have resided in the original clients gun safe all these years. Since they were conceived as a pair, that is the way they must remain. We will consider breaking them up only at a steep premium. Kent is no longer with us, Bob and George are retired so this pair cannot be duplicated again.
