DOCUMENTED 19th Century “WIND GUN” Top Lever TIP-UP “Gallery/Parlor AIR GUN Primarily Used for INDOOR TARGET SHOOTING/HUNTING
Description: DOCUMENTED 19th Century “WIND GUN” Top Lever TIP-UP “Gallery/Parlor AIR GUN Primarily Used for INDOOR TARGET SHOOTING/HUNTING Here we present a Documented Top Lever Tip-Up Gallery/Parlor Air Gun, made circa the 19th Century. Air guns represent the oldest pneumatic technology. The oldest existing mechanical air gun dates back to about 1580 and is in the Livrustkammaren Museum in Stockholm. This is approximately what most historians recognize as the beginning of the modern air gun. Throughout 17th to 19th century, air guns in .30 to .51 calibers were used to hunt big game, deer, and wild boar. These air rifles were charged using a pump to fill an air reservoir and gave velocities from 650 to 1,000 ft/s. They were also used in warfare, the most recognized example being the Girandoni air rifle. Aside from indoor target shooting, guns of this style were also used for hunting. “Wind guns” had several advantages over conventional firearms, including that they were quieter, smokeless, quicker to reload, and relatively unaffected by rain. They required less cleaning since they did not require corrosive black powder. This example is chambered in approximately .30 caliber/7.5mm. This exact air gun is photographed and described on page 100 of “Blue Book of Airguns, Thirteenth Edition”. This air gun has a tip-up octagon barrel that loads from the breech, and it functions through the use of a top lever for cocking in order to fill the cylinder reservoir, and upon puller the trigger, the spring loaded piston releases. The overall condition is fair to good. Original patina. The action is not fully tested, but the barrel release does tip up the barrel and the lever pump works under strong spring tension. The bore is smooth and shiny. The butt stock has a chip at the toe and is otherwise solid. The fore stock moves somewhat in relation to the reservoir and has two stable splits at the front. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 20-1/4 inches. Caliber: .30 / 7.5mm Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
