Wilkinson-Webley Model 1905 Revolver Belonging To Capt in 21st Lancers
Description: Serial #124685 (Reg. #1954), .455 Webley, 6" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a splendid looking revolver that has matching numbers on the frame, cylinder, and barrel, while the metal retains 90-95% of the original bright commercial blue finish with some mild brown freckling along the sides of the barrel, and some thin silvering along the high and exposed edges. The topstrap is marked: "WILKINSON-WEBLEY ’05" along the left side, and "WILKINSON, PALL MALL, LONDON" along the rib. The checkered, walnut grips are in very good-near fine condition with mild wear and flattening of the points on both sides, and there is some blue tarnish on the engraved silver escutcheon inlay on the left panel: "J.W.D.E." The barrel lock-up is tight and the mechanism is fully functional. James William Douglas Evans was born on November 11, 1884. He was educated at Winchester and Trinity Colleges, and played golf for Cambridge before graduating in 1906 with a degree in Mechanical Science. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in January of 1908 and gazetted to the 21st (Empress of India's) Lancers. He was promoted to Lieutenant in November of 1910, and again to Captain on August 5, 1914 (the day after Great Britain declared war on Germany). Evans served on the Northwest frontier of India from 1915 to 1917 as a staff officer, and was a Staff Officer in the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force where he was wounded in action and mentioned in Gen. W.R. Marshall's despatch of October 1, 1918 for "…distinguished and gallant service and devotion to duty" ("London Gazette" February 21, 1919). He was entitled to wear the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal with Oak Leaves. This is a truly handsome, and almost unused example of a seldom seen Wilkinson Revolver, and rates excellent condition overall.
