Wilkinson-Webley Model 1892 Revolver Belonging to Lt. Col. 11th Hussar
Description: Serial #11305 (Wilkinson Reg. #8808), .476 Caliber, 6" ribbed barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a small amount of freckling within the grooves near the breech. This is a very nice looking revolver that retains 75-80% of the original bright nickel finish with mild flaking and freckling to dark brown underlying metal. The barrel rib is engraved “WILKINSON & SON PALL MALL, LONDON" along the rib, and engraved with the owner’s name along the underside: “G.T. WILLIAMS". The checkered, walnut grip is in very good condition with some mild wear and small surface blemishes on either side. The barrel lock-up is tight and the mechanism is fully functional. Wilkinson records show that this revolver was sold on December 23, 1894 to “G.T. Williams / 11th Hussars". Godfrey Trevelyan Williams was born on October 26, 1871, at Pencalenick, Truro, Cornwall, and was educated at Harrow. He entered the Militia as a 2nd Lieutenant in January of 1889, and was gazetted to the 4th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, at Exeter. He transferred to the regular army on December 23, 1893 (one year prior to purchasing this revolver) and served in the 11th Hussars (Prince Albert’s Own). He eventually posted with the regiment to India, and served in the Punjab, Peshawar, Meerut, and Bengal. He was promoted to Lieutenant in January of 1896, and returned with the regiment for service in Ireland where he was promoted to Captain in September of 1904. He was appointed Adjutant of the Glamorganshire Yeomanry in 1906, and promoted to Major in September of 1908. He retired soon after and was appointed Brigade Major (ret’d. Reserve Officer) of the Nottingham & Derby Mounted Brigade, Territorial Army, on March 10, 1910. He was employed by the Remount Service just prior to WW1 and eventually served at Gallipoli during the Dardanelles Campaign, Egypt, Libya, and France during the war. He continued in the Remount Service following the war, and was also a Co-opted Member of the Territorial Forces Association at Cornwall until his final retirement as a Lt. Colonel sometime around 1930. Williams was a member of many civilian and military associations up to, and after WW2, and passed away in 1955 at Falmouth, Cornwall. This is a truly handsome, well-used example of a seldom seen Wilkinson Revolver, identified to a long-serving British officer, and rates excellent condition overall.
