WEBLEY POLICE .38 S&W
Description: British Service Pistol, Used by Singapore Police Webley & Scott Mark IV Top Break Revolver in .38, made in Birmingham, England circa the mid-20th Century. British military use of Webley revolvers began in the late-19th Century. Especially favored in the early-20th Century were those chambered for the .455 caliber cartridges. However, at the end of the Great War, it was decided a smaller, more manageable revolver and cartridge combination were desirable, so Webley and the government settled on the .38 S&W cartridge and designed a much smaller 6-shot, top-break revolver to shoot it. This was to be much friendlier as far as recoil and much smaller and lighter than its predecessor in .455, though debatably, not as lethal. Various British police forces, including colonial police forces used these revolvers through the late-20th Century, notably both Hong Kong and Singapore Police. This example is from the Singapore Police Force, who used these revolvers from the 1930s-1970s, and is marked “SPF 2023” just above the grips on the frame of the gun. The top-strap is marked “WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD/BIRMINGHAM”. The grips are trademarked “WEBLEY”. The entirety of the revolver is littered with proof and acceptance marks. The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces bear 95% of its original finish. The markings are clear and legible. The numbers match. The grips are in great shape. The bore is excellent; bright and shiny with strong rifling. The action is excellent. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes |
