Presentation Webley Mk. II .380 Revolver by Hooten & Jones 2 digit ser

Serial #89, .380 Revolver, 3" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a few minor spots of freckling within the grooves. This is a lovely little revolver that has matching numbers on the frame, cylinder, and barrel, and retains 85-90% of the original nickel finish with engraved retailer marking on the topstrap: “HOOTEN & JONES / 60 DALE ST. LIVERPOOL", and a later engraved presentation along the left side of the barrel: “PRESENTED TO WM. SPANN / BY A FEW WOODSIDE FERRY FRIENDS. / 1900". Most of the flaking occurs on the presentation, which has plum-brown underlying metal where the nickel has flaked. The checkered, hard rubber grips are in very good condition with mild flattening to the points on both panels, and a large chip missing from the toe of the left panel. The barrel lock-up is tight and the mechanism is fully functional. William Parker Spann was born in 1875 and was 24 when he enlisted as a Volunteer Private during the Boer War. His service number was 7433, and his occupation was listed as “Ferry Inspector" when he was enrolled as a volunteer in the Cheshire Regiment. The volunteer company was commanded by Captain S. Thornely and underwent about a month of training, equipping, and inoculations before shipping out for South Africa in February of 1900 (presumably the occasion commemorated by the presentation on the revolver). The volunteers were utilized on the front lines, fighting side by side with seasoned, regular units and upon their return in August of 1901, Pvt. Spann was one of those presented with the War Medal by Gen. Swaine. Spann resumed his civilian work as a ferry inspector for the Woodside Ferry Dock in Birkenhead on the Mersey opposite Liverpool.
