Cased Wilkinson-Webley Pryse No. 4 Revolver
Description: Serial #6262 (Wilkinson Reg. #7955), .455 CF, 5 3/4" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves. This is a Wilkinson-marked revolver that has matching numbers on the frame and cylinder. The metal retains 60-70% of the original nickel finish with flaking to plum-brown in spots, as well as mottled gray underlying metal visible along the left and underside of the barrel assembly. The checkered walnut grip is in very good shape with moderate handling marks and some flattening of the points. The lock-up is still tight and the action functions flawlessly in both single and double-action. The revolver is housed in a period oak case with a George Newnham of Portsmouth retailer's label on the lid interior, and has a lightly worn, original blue baize interior lining. The case contains a crystal oil bottle, turn-screw, and cleaning rod, and has a small handwitten note pasted to the interior that reads: "Presented by Cpt. (Curzon?) / of HMS Monarch / to Rich. Shaw 1887". There was no officer by that name in command of HMS Monarch at the time, but there was a midshipman named R.D. Shaw who resigned from the Royal Navy that year. The small circular escutcheon on the lid is faintly scratched, "R.D.S.", and this could very well have been a parting gift from an improperly remembered Naval officer. In any event, this is a very good, desirable Wilkinson revolver, and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique SOLD Antique: Yes |
