Boer War Webley Mk. IV Long-Barrel Revolver Capt. Cheshire Regt.
Description: Serial #80598, .455/.476, 6" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an excellent condition Army & Navy CSL marked revolver that has matching numbers on the frame, cylinder, and barrel, with the metal retaining 95-97% of the original blue finish, that has silvered along the raised edges and projections, as well as a mild turn-ring on the cylinder. The checkered hard rubber grips are in fine shape with some minor flattening of the points, as well as a few minor scratches and handling blemishes on either side. The lock-up is still tight and the mechanism functions flawlessly. According to the Army & Navy CSL records, this revolver was sold on February 17, 1900 to “Friederichs Lt. Esq. 4/Cheshire Regt." Lionel Hugo Thornely Friederichs was gazetted to the 4th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, as a 2nd Lieutenant in August of 1899. At the time, it was a Militia unit, but mounting casualties in South Africa necessitated a call-up to active service. The 4th Bn. embarked for South Africa on February 26, 1900 (nine days after Friederichs purchased this revolver) and after arriving in-country, began operations in the Transvaal. He was promoted to Lieutenant on July 23, and the 4th Bn. then commenced garrison duties at Bethulie for the remainder of the war. On January 3, 1902, he was promoted to Captain, and the returned to England with the rest of the battalion in April. Not long after its return, the battalion was released from active service, with Friederichs being given special mention in Field Marshal Kitchener’s final dispatch from South Africa. He was again called up in March of 1915 as a Temporary Captain, but did not serve overseas, and was listed as an unattached officer in 1918. In 1919, he was appointed a Railway Transport Officer, and gave up his commission the following year. This is an excellent example of a truly handsome Webley model, with a great long barrel, and desirable Boer War officer’s history. FFL or C&R SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Manufacturer: Webley Model: Mk.
