Very Rare British Military Purchase Tranter Model 1868 Solid frame Revolver
Description: Serial #59703, .450 CF, 4 1/2" octagon barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a very rare, commercially produced revolver (no retailer’s marking present) that was one of 150 purchased by the British War Department in 1879 to supplement military revolver stores during the numerous colonial wars of the period. This example has a mottled gray-brown patina with traces of original blue remaining on protected areas. Further remnants of bright nitre-blue can still be seen on the ejector rod retaining spring on the left side of the frame, and a good amount of original blue remains on the ejector rod arm as well. The checkered walnut grip is very good shape with minor wear and some flattening of the points, and also has a British military inspector’s mark on the back, just below the knuckle, and a double arrow deaccession mark at the butt on the right side. In addition to the commercial proofs and Tranter "football" marking, the right side of the frame has the War Department "(arrow) / WD" stamp, "3. 79" date of purchase stamp, as well as double arrow and "C S / A" sale markings. The action is firm and functions well. These revolvers were issued by the War Department until 1885, when they were released for commercial sales to the public. Very few of these revolvers have survived in private hands, with some estimates as low as ten known. This rare example exhibits the hallmarks of tropical issue, but was evidently not fired very much, if at all, judging by the excellent bore condition. Antique SOLD Antique: Yes |
