Published Tranter Model 1879 Belonging to Capt St. Lawrence w/Case
Description: Serial #4637, .450/.455 CF, 5" octagon barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome, Westley Richards-retailed, engraved revolver that has retained 80-85% of the original nickel finish with mottled plum-brown metal where the nickel has flaked. The barrel rib and topstrap are engraved in block letters: “WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co., LONDON"; WITH delicate scrollwork filigree, and the owners’ name engraved on the gripstrap: “K. St. LAWRENCE / VDG" (Capt. Kenelm St. Lawrence / 5th Dragoon Guards). The one-piece walnut grip is in fine condition with only minor handling marks and blemishes, and some mild flattening of the points. The barrel lock-up is tight, the action functions flawlessly, and the clearance notch at the top of the hammer has been trimmed away. The revolver is housed in its original Westley Richards labeled oak traveling case with original green baize lining, oil bottle, turn-screw, cleaning rod, and key. Kenelm Digby St. Lawrence was born on December 12, 1855, the only son of Sir Thomas St. Lawrence, KP (Baron Howth, Viscount St. Lawrence, and 3rd Earl of Howth), and educated at Harrow. On April 1, 1876, he entered Militia service, and was commissioned a Sub-Lieutenant in The King’s Own Royal Tower Hamlets, transferring to the Westmeath Militia on December 20. On November 10, 1877, he entered the British Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, and was gazetted to the 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales’) Dragoon Guards. For the next five years, he served at stations in England, including Aldershot and Leeds. He was promoted to Lieutenant on August 21, 1878, and served throughout the Egyptian Campaign of 1882 attached to the 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards, including at Tel-el-Kebir, September 13, 1882. He was entitled to wear the Egyptian War Medal with Clasp, and the Khedive’s Bronze Star. St. Lawrence was promoted to Captain on December 19, 1883. Upon his return to Great Britain, he served at various home stations, including leading troops at the Belfast riots in August, 1886. On April 22, 1891, he was placed on temporary half-pay due to illness, and died 16 days later of typhoid fever. He was interred in the chancellery of the Old Church, St. Mary’s Abbey, Howth. This revolver is described and illustrated on pgs. 222 thru 225 of “Tranter Cartridge Firearms" by Black, Guerin & Michaud; (2007), and would make a splendid addition to any collection of Tranter, or identified British handguns.
