Cased Tranter No. 1 Revolver by Stephen Grant (Published)
Description: Serial #6783, .22 RF, 2 1/2" octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves. This is a very nice, seven-shot revolver with all-matching assembly numbers (“21"). The revolver is retailer marked along the top of the barrel: “S. GRANT ST. JAMES’S ST. LONDON", with the Tranter “football" marking on the left side of the frame at the breech as well. The barrel, hammer, and loading gate have retained 95-97% of the original blue, with traces of gray fading on the balance, and some minor impact marks scattered about. The cylinder retains traces of the original blue finish on protected areas, but otherwise has an overall smooth, dark gray patina, with silvering along the high edges, and the engraved brass frame has a fairly bright, yellow-ochre patina with traces of original gold wash on the protected areas. The finely checkered walnut grips are in fine-excellent shape with only very mild flattening of the points. The lock-up is tight, and the action is fully functional. The revolver is housed in a period, burled walnut English case with dark blue baize lining, original key, and metal cleaning rod. The lid has a blank, shield-shaped escutcheon. This very revolver and case are described and illustrated on pg. 24 and 25 of “Tranter Cartridge Firearms" by Black, Guerin & Michaud; 2007. This is a handsome, cased, smallbore Tranter that would make a fabulous addition to any collection of Tranter handguns.
