Cased Kynoch Model 1868/1878 Tranter Type Revolver
Description: NSN, .450 CF, 5" octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some minor freckling within the grooves. This is a very handsome, "KYNOCH GUN FACTORY ASTON"-marked revolver that retains 70-75% of the original bright blue finish with silvering along the edges of the barrel facets and along the edges of the frame. The balance of the metal has flaked to the underlying plum-brown metal, with scattered small areas of freckling throughout. The cylinder and ejector rod housing retain about 85-90% of the original color case-hardening, with only some mild gray fading in a few spots. The loading gate and cylinder pin have some case-hardening remaining, with the balance turned to pewter gray. The hammer, trigger, and trigger guard have a freckled gray-brown patina throughout, while the one-piece walnut grip is in fine shape, with some minor handling marks at the heel, and some flattening of the points. The revolver is housed in a period leather travel case with partially relined green baize interior, including an added Wilkinson label on the inside of the lid (the revolver has neither a Wilkinson mark, nor a Wilkinson registration number). Also included are a steel whistle, 20th century British pistol lanyard, silver Kynoch oil bottle, cleaning rod, and embroidered Kolapore Cup 1909 patch. The lid has a brass plaque engraved with: "CAPT. J.D. HARDING / SCOTS GUARDS / WINDSOR". We cannot find a record of a J.D. Harding competing in the 1909 Kolapore Cup match at Bisley. Nevertheless, the revolver is in excellent condition, with an unusually high amount of original finish remaining. It would make a great addition to any collection.
