Smith & Wesson Military & Police, 1946 Vintage, "S" Prefix Serial Number, Cal. .38 Special

Description:
Smith & Wesson Military & Police fitted with a 4 inch barrel, built on a 5-screw frame with plugged lanyard hole in bottom of grip, diamond checkered grips (are correct style but do not number to the gun), is blue finished with color case-hardened finished hammer & trigger, and chambered in .38 Special.  This 1946 vintage S&W M&P is in excellent original condition, retaining 90% original blue and 95% original color case-hardened finishes.  The bore is bright with sharp rifling and the action functions perfectly, with perfect triming and tight lock-up.  The grips fit well and are in fine condition, with a small chip repair on the left grip and assorted handling marks on the right grip.  Gun is all numbers matching (Frame to cylinder, barrel, & crane) except for the grips.  This is a pre-"C" prefix serial number gun, a post Victory or "V" prefix serial number gun, with a "S" prefix (S 816302) which were made from the end of war to 1948 when production of the "C" prefix serial numbered guns began.  There is also a "S" stamp on the side-plate under the right grip, the "S" prefix serial and stamp on sideplate indicating a new hammer block was installed.   An unusual variate of the Post-War S&W M&P.    NOTE: There were also "SV" prefix .38 Special guns manufactured, which were made late war period, rare with only 42,119 produced, along side the S&W M&P British .38/200 guns.                                                 CURIO & RELIC
