Very Rare Unfired Smith and Wesson Model 042 Centennial Airweight .38 S&W Special Revolver with Factory Box, Papers, Tools, etc. in "New" Condition. You won't fine one any finer than this. There were 4415 produced in 1992-early 1993 (see Note Below). Some had a Matte finish and some had a polished blue finish. This revolver is the highly desireable non-overstamp with polished blue finish. If there were 4415 total produced, you would think they would appear more often than they actually do. This model was never cataloged.
NOTE: I have been a Smith and Wesson collector for over 30 years. It is my considered opinion that the 4th Edition Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson is incorrect on the number of these produced in 1992 and early 1993. First of all, I find it hard to believe Smith and Wesson produced over 2000 frames before assembling any and then deciding to overstamp them as 042. Did the entire assembly line have a vacation that required 2000 frames to back up before assembly? 4000 in one year, I don't think so. And, if there are 4415 of these floating around, how come these don't come up for sale more often than a lunar eclipse? Smith and Wesson made 8000 Model 16-4 over 4 years and at any one time you will see over 10 for sale on the various gun venues. So, shouldn't you see at least 5 Model 042s for sale at any given time? Try zero most of the time!!!
