Description:
This is a beautiful, all-original Smith & Wesson .38 Safety Hammerless revolver in .38 S&W with a factory 5" inch barrel and factory Mother of Pearl grips.  This antique .38 Safety Hammerless is a 3rd Model, manufactured in 1897.  The .38 DA Safety Hammerless was first introduced in 1887 and remained in production until 1940, with multiple variations offered that fall into 5 distinct "model" categories recognized by collectors today.  Overall, the .38 DA Safety Hammerless was a huge success for the S&W firm, proving to be a very reliable, well-made, and accurate self-defense/pocket pistol.  Sharing all of the popular features of the .32 caliber Safety Hammerless, the .38 S&W chambering of this larger brother had much better stopping power.  This particular example is serial number 99,954, and is a 100% original and all-matching gun.  It features a factory nickel finish, a factory blued latch, triggerguard, and cylinder bolt, a case-colored trigger, and a beautiful set of factory Mother of Pearl grips.  This 3rd Model has the somewhat scarce 5" inch barrel, most examples we have seen are fitted with the 3.25" or 4" inch barrel.  The factory finishes on this S&W are in very good to excellent condition overall, showing only minor handling/storage marks and a very small amount of freckling in spots.  All of the factory markings are crisp, clear, and legible.  All of the numbered parts are factory stamped and matching, including the three major components of the barrel, frame, and cylinder.  The bore in this Safety Hammerless is very good with strong and sharp rifling throughout the barrel and only a few tiny spots of pitting.  The six chambers of the cylinder are equally as clean.  The beautiful genuine Mother of Pearl factory grips on this Smith are in very good condition overall and show lots of depth and color.  The mechanics and action of this revolver are in perfect working order.  The action is smooth, precise, and perfectly "in time".  All of the controls are 100% functional.  This .38 Safety Hammerless should function just as well today as the day it left the factory 124 years ago!   If you have have been looking for an exceptional antique S&W .38 Safety Hammerless for your collection this 3rd Model would be an excellent choice.  As an antique S&W, this revolver can be shipped directly to you without any FFL needed (or transfer fee).
