1981 Vintage Kentucky State Police Smith & Wesson Model 686 .357 Magnum Revolver
** Handsome K.S.P. Gun ** SOLD
Description:
This is a very cool, all-original Smith & Wesson 4" Model 686 .357 Magnum revolver previously owned and used by the Kentucky State Police. This exceptionally clean second year of production 686 is just exactly how it was issued to the troopers, complete with the original black checkered rubber Pachmayr grips that the K.S.P. issued them with. The Smith & Wesson Model 686 "Distinguished Combat Magnum" revolver was first introduced in 1980 as a stainless steel version of the Model 586 by the same name. It was a DA/SA revolver chambered in .357 Magnum that was built on the square-butt "L" target frame. It was offered with multiple barrel lengths running from 2.5" inches to 8 & 3/8ths" inches and featured a 6-shot fluted cylinder, a full length underlug on the barrel, a ten-groove front and rear gripstrap, a semi-target hammer, a smooth combat trigger, a red ramp front sight, an adjustable target style rear with a white outline, and various different grips from standard checkered wood to Goncalo Alves Target grips. The Model 686 was an immediate success and quickly proved to be a superb revolver that was well-made, exceptionally reliable, durable, accurate, and powerful. The Kentucky State Police (along with many other police departments across the U.S.) quickly recognized it's advantages over the S&W Model 66's they were currently carrying and adopted it as their standard service weapon less than a year after it was introduced. The S&W 686 would go on to serve the K.S.P. very well for many years until the S&W Model 1076 semi-automatic pistol was adopted in the early 1990's. Many of the officers that carried this fine revolver wanted no part of the new automatic but were forced to turn them in anyway. This was essentially the end of an era for the revolver and police departments across the country. This particular example is serial number AAF4307 and Kentucky State Police weapon number 28537-GO5. It is in excellent condition both inside and out; it was obviously well-cared for by the officer(s) that it was issued to. The stainless steel is still bright and clean rating 96 to 97%, with only some very minor handling marks and a touch of holster wear at either side of the muzzle. The bore in the 4" inch barrel is mirror-bright and pristine, showing sharp lands and grooves in the rifling throughout and no visible imperfections or wear. The 6 chambers of the cylinder are equally as pristine. The S&W factory markings are all crisp and clean on this Smith, as-are the Kentucky State Police logo on the right side of the frame and the K.S.P. weapon number on the left lower frame above the trigger. The as-issued black rubber Pachmayr "Presentation Grip" is in excellent condition, free from any tears, rips, repairs, or visible wear. The rubber checkering is still crisp and the grip screw is in perfect shape. The action on this Model 686 is exceptionally smooth, slick, and precise. The action is perfectly "in time" regardless of whether the gun is worked in single or double-action, as fast as possible or super slow. All of the controls are in perfect working order, including both the windage and elevation adjustments on the rear sight. We have no doubt that this Smith will function just as reliably and accurately today as the day it left the factory over 40 years ago! If you have been looking for a truly exceptional example of a Kentucky State Police Model 686 for your collection here is your chance to get one of the best we have ever had.
