Smith & Wesson Model 66-2 .357 BATF Commemorative w/Presentation Case
Description: The Combat Magnum Stainless. The Model 66 started production in 1970 under that model number, but as its carbon steel predecessor, the Model 19 was sold under the name Combat Magnum for a while, the Model 66 was bestowed with a similar name with Stainless added into the title. The 66 was produced in 2.5-inch, 4-inch, and 6-inch variations, with the first having a round butt and the latter two with a square butt. This one is a special commemorative of the 50th Anniversary of the ATF’s founding. It has been fired, but very little as evidenced by the presence of light powder burns on just two of the six chambers. The 66 remains in the original case which is imprinted with the ATF’s seal, and comes with a nice belt buckle. It features the 4-inch barrel, a red ramp front sight, micrometer click rear sight, round butt grips, .312-inch smooth combat trigger, .375” semi-target hammer, and a 10-groove forestrap and backstrap. The Model 66 was designed to allow police officers to practice with the handgun using 38 Special, while carrying it with the 357 Magnum. Thusly, they would be equipped with a .357 revolver lighter than the larger N-frame Model 27, and one stronger than the original Model 19. That the 66 fulfilled its intended role well has been recorded in the annals of law enforcement history. It is one of the more fondly remembered revolvers from the 70s and 80s. They have been used by such agencies as the Bureau of Alcohol Firearms and Tobacco (BATF, 4in barrel), several state Highway Patrols, and the Naval Investigative Service (NIS, predecessor to the famous NCIS). This Model 66 would be an excellent addition to the collection of any Smith & Wesson enthusiast.
