The .357 Magnum was S&W’s answer to the .38 Super chambered in the famous Colt 1911A1. While revolvers were a national standard for use by police departments, many officers were finding that their .38 S&W and 38 Specials could not penetrate car bodies which was becoming a problem given the then escalating frequency of encounters between the police and gangsters and other outlaws. At the time of its introduction in 1929, the .38 Super was the only commercially available handgun cartridge that could reliably penetrate car doors (due to its muzzle velocity being higher than 1000 ft/s). S&W’s initial response to this was the .38/44 revolver and cartridge (38 Special on a N frame). As the .38/44 round is identical to the 38 Special, but chambered for a higher pressure, this created the problem wherein one could inadvertently use the .38/44 in a small frame 38 Special with potentially dangerous results. By the early 1930s, realizing that their revolver sales were in jeopardy, S&W introduced the .357 Magnum in 1935 in the .357 Registered Magnum Revolver (N frame). There a few light scratches on the bottom of the trigger guard. There is light finish wear at the muzzle and on the frontal edges of the frame. The cylinder has a turn ring and the ejector rod also exhibits finish wear. The trigger and hammer have some slight wear of the case hardened finish. The cylinder has a couple of nicks on the back face of the cylinder. The grips are in excellent shape with only minor handling wear. The yoke and ejector rod are a little stiff due to the age of the oil used to lubricate the gun, which is most likely the original factory oil. The bore is in mint condition and appears as though it left the factory yesterday, which will contribute to extreme accuracy. The action is consistent but feels slowed, again likely due to the oil. The hammer spring screw appears to have been loosened a few threads to lighten the hammer spring. As a result, the single-action pull is light. Another, desirable aspect of this beautiful firearm is that, unlike later S&W models, this one has no trigger lock. This is a desirable feature of the older S&W revolvers and the expression “pre-lock” is a common denotation of this feature. This revolver is in great condition and would be an excellent addition to any S&W owner’s collection. Conversely, if the action were cleaned and re-oiled, it would a fantastic shooter.

The .357 Registered Magnum was essentially a custom ordered gun and most are unique, with the purchaser specifying sights, finish, grips, and barrel lengths of their choosing starting at 3.5” and going up by 1/4” increments up to 8-3/4”. The .357 Registered Magnum was followed by the .357 Non-registered Magnum variant which standardized barrel lengths to 3.5”, 5”, 6”, 6-1/2”, and 8-3/8”. Naturally, production ceased for World War II, after which, the revolver returned to production in 1948 as the .357 Magnum Revolver (aka the Pre-27). In 1957, model numbers were assigned to all S&W revolvers and the .357 Magnum became the Model 27. Overall, both the revolver and the cartridge it introduced became legendary in both police, military, and civilian circles. George S. Patton, the famous WWII general, carried a 3.5” barreled .357 Registered Magnum alongside one of his Colt Peacemakers (in .45 Colt) during that War. The 27 is still in production as part of the S&W Classic Series and a stainless version, the 627, is also popular. The .357 Magnum is available in numerous revolvers produced by several manufacturers including S&W, Colt, Ruger, Taurus, Uberti, Korth, Charter Arms, and a few others. It has also been chambered in large frame semi-auto pistols such as the IMI/Magnum Research Desert Eagle and the Coonan pistol. It has also been chambered in many lever action rifles as well. This revolver is a 27-2 variation. This was the last variant to feature the famous S&W pinned barrel. The serial number, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, indicates this gun was manufactured between 1977 and 1978. Naturally, it is used, but it retains the majority of its original finish. There are barely any powder burns on the front of the cylinder. There is an unusual group of notable (but not deep) scratches on the left hand side of the frame just before the barrel exits the frame. There a few light scratches on the bottom of the trigger guard. There is light finish wear at the muzzle and on the frontal edges of the frame. The cylinder has a turn ring and the ejector rod also exhibits finish wear. The trigger and hammer have some slight wear of the case hardened finish. The cylinder has a couple of nicks on the back face of the cylinder. The grips are in excellent shape with only minor handling wear. The yoke and ejector rod are a little stiff due to the age of the oil used to lubricate the gun, which is most likely the original factory oil. The bore is in mint condition and appears as though it left the factory yesterday, which will contribute to extreme accuracy. The action is consistent but feels slowed, again likely due to the oil. The hammer spring screw appears to have been loosened a few threads to lighten the hammer spring. As a result, the single-action pull is light. Another, desirable aspect of this beautiful firearm is that, unlike later S&W models, this one has no trigger lock. This is a desirable feature of the older S&W revolvers and the expression “pre-lock” is a common denotation of this feature. This revolver is in great condition and would be an excellent addition to any S&W owner’s collection. Conversely, if the action were cleaned and re-oiled, it would a fantastic shooter.

While revolvers were a national standard for use by police departments, many officers were finding that their .38 S&W and 38 Specials could not penetrate car bodies which was becoming a problem given the then escalating frequency of encounters between the police and gangsters and other outlaws. At the time of its introduction in 1929, the .38 Super was the only commercially available handgun cartridge that could reliably penetrate car doors (due to its muzzle velocity being higher than 1000 ft/s). S&W’s initial response to this was the .38/44 revolver and cartridge (38 Special on a N frame). As the .38/44 round is identical to the 38 Special, but chambered for a higher pressure, this created the problem wherein one could inadvertently use the .38/44 in a small frame 38 Special with potentially dangerous results. By the early 1930s, realizing that their revolver sales were in jeopardy, S&W introduced the .357 Magnum in 1935 in the .357 Registered Magnum Revolver (N frame). The .357 Magnum used a 0.125-inch longer case to prevent the round from being fired in a revolver chambered for the .38 Special. As such, any .357 Magnum revolver will also shoot the .38 Special.
