RARE AND SELDOM SEEN "BABY CHIEF'S SPECIAL" PRE-36, MADE ON THE "I" FRAME WITH PLAIN BARREL WITH HALF-MOON FRONT SIGHT, IN ORIGINAL MATCHING NUMBERED RED BOX, #2XXX, MADE 1950-51. This was the very first type Chief's Special five shot .38 Special revolver. After the first year or so, the frame was changed to the slightly larger "J" style with larger trigger guard etc., and a ribbed barrel with a ramp front sight. These first examples are known as "Baby Chief's Specials" and are rarely encountered. This little 5-screw example with all matching numbers including the grips appears near new in the correct box with end label reading, "SMITH & WESSON 38 Chiefs Special Blued - 2 Inch" Inside the box lid is the usual early "Directions for Use" information etc. The box is in excellent condition overall and has the serial number penciled on the bottom. A truly great find with the original box in basically unused condition.
