Antique Smith & Wesson "Frontier" Double Action 44-40. Excellent Mechanics. With Original Antique Holster.
Description: Antique Smith & Wesson Frontier Double Action revolver with an antique original holster that was made for this model and fits like a glove.. This is the Frontier model chambered in the sought after 44-40 caliber. Has the standard 6 1/2” barrel. S/N is 7650 and all matching on the frame, barrel, cylinder and barrel latch. This model was made in 1886 to 1913 with 15,340 total manufactured. This has a very early S/N so probably made in the late 1880's or very early 1890's. Absolutely in the antique S/N range. This is a well used ole hog leg that has no finish remaining. Over all it is a medium gray to slightly light brown patina. I has a few scattered spots of very light pin prick pitting and some surface crud but never heavily cleaned on. No heavy pitting and no unusual bad spots. No dings or tool marks.. This is a pretty smooth gun over all. The front sight has been replaced with what looks like an old coin. It looks like a bit taller than the factory front sights so probably an original owner wanted the gun to shoot a little lower so added a slightly taller front sight to make it shoot point to aim. All these antique revolvers seem to shoot high. I like to hit were I am aiming at also !! Excellent job who ever did it. The mechanics are very good. A crisp and tight gun.. It works in double action and single action. It indexes excellent and the timing is correct. The safety notch holds but it does not have a very loud click when it engages but you can hear it and it does hold. The full cock notch holds with no push off and has a very crisp trigger pull. Main spring feels a little light but I have shot this gun with proper black powder loads and it goes bang every time. Rock solid barrel to frame fit at the hinge and the barrel latch with no wobbles or movement what so ever. NO front to rear cylinder movement and NO side to side cylinder wobble. Usually these well used Smith & Wesson's are so loose and rattly they are no ways near safe to shoot anymore but this one is very solid. The barrel address is all readable. The grips shows lots of honest wear as does the gun. There are NO cracks or chips and a perfect factory fit. The bore shows good rifling with some wear and light roughness but NO deep pitting or any rings or bulges. The cylinder chambers are clean with no roughness. The extractor works perfectly and very positive and snaps shut just like it is suppose to. The only bad thing about this gun when I bought it was the firing pin was dovetailed into the face of the hammer and was a little loose.. Probably done 100 years ago.. I micro welded it on both sides and it is tight and solid now just like new so no problems with that issue. All of the screw heads are very clean and sharp and not all tool marked like you will usually see on a well used antique revolver. The Holster is very solid and very well made. The stitching is solid but just a few stitches at the toe have come loose.. Easily repaired if so desired. Has a very nice floral carving on the front. It was lined when new as you can see the stitch holes at the throat and on the top area on the back so it was a very well made holster at the time.. Not some junk and paper thin mail order holster that was popular back in the days.. This holster was made for The S&W double actions or maybe the Colt 1878 double actions because of the larger trigger guard area as you can see.. It fits this gun like a glove. Two loop design with the loops riveted on the skirt and through the back. The rivets on the front have been there a long time and I think the upper and lower are original. Not sure about the two in the middle. Anyway, just a very nice looking and solid holster. Probably dates to around late 1880's or 1890 to about 1900 and a perfect match as far as the age goes to the gun. This is a very displayable set and a shooter with the proper black powder loads at a very reasonable price. .. Both the gun and holster show very honest wear but NO abuse.
