EARLY AND VERY SELDOM SEEN PRE-23 .38/44 OUTDOORSMAN TARGET REVOLVER, .38 SPECIAL CALIBER BUILT ON THE BIG "N" FRAME WITH ONLY APPROX. 6,000 MADE FROM 1950-1957. Almost the total production of this model was made during these years with about 50-100 estimated made from 1957-1963 as the Model 23. The .38/44 Outdoorsman was the target sighted version of the big .38/44 Heavy Duty revolver made to take "+P" .38 Special ammunition intended mainly for law enforcement usage (not far off .357 Magnum ammo). Many of these revolvers were later re-chambered to .357 Magnum outside the factory which greatly reduces the desirability of the model from a collector standpoint. This is an unaltered example. The serial number range for these was from S75000 to S261999. The number on this revolver is S98XXX making it probably a first or second year production example (1950-1951). It is in excellent+ condition overall showing nearly all the original "S&W Dull blue" finish that was standard for this model. There is only some light thinning for about an inch toward the muzzle on the left side and barely a touch of blue wear to the right side muzzle. The front face of the cylinder retains about all the blue indicating this revolver was rarely if ever fired. All serial numbers on the frame, cylinder, barrel AND INSIDE THE DIAMOND CHECKERED GRIPS match. Nice case color remains on the hammer and trigger. A very fine condition limited production 70+ year old "N" frame S&W.
