Remington New Model Army - converted to .46 Rimfire by S&W in 1868
Description: This is the best condition, by far, of the Remington conversions of their New Model Army that I have ever seen in 30+ years of collecting. The Remington New Model Army was converted by S&W for Remington, under contract, from .44 percussion to .46 Rimfire. The serial number (136690) and the conversion number (3291) are marked on the revolver. Of the 4,674 that Remington sent to S&W, 4,574 were successfully converted to .46 Rimfire. Kitteridge of Cincinnati (distributor) took 4,141 of them and marketed them to those involved in America's westward expansion. The remaining 433 converted New Model Army revolvers were sold commercially by Remington. The fact that over 90% of the New Model Army revolvers in .46 Rimfire were sent west is considered the reason why it is so hard to find one in fine or better examples today. This revolver is one of those rare very fine or better New Model Army revolvers in .46 Rimfire that was converted by S&W in 1968. It has the cylinder marked with S&W's patent date, "Patented April 5, 1855". This revolver will ship in an awesome custom, black walnut case that measures 16 X 7 1/4" X 4" with an engraved 3 1/8" X 1 1/2" engraved, pre-ban ivory plaque inlaid in the case lid, a five round bullet block, a brass oiler inset in the bullet block, and an African ebony and pre-ban ivory handled cleaning rod and screwdriver. This Remington revolver can be found in the 2nd Edition of "The Civil War and the Firearms Trade", pages 315-317. This is a very collectible revolver. SOLD Antique: Yes |
